Clinics and Services

We have a highly skilled team of nurses and health care assistants (“HCAs”) who are fully trained in chronic disease management (eg. diabetes and asthma), wound management, immunisations and health checks etc.

The clinics and services included are:

Cervical Smears

Smears are offered to women aged between 25 and 65.

The national cervical screening programme is a method of preventing cancer by detecting and treating early abnormalities which, if left untreated, could lead to cancer (usually over a number of years). Most smears are now carried out by our practice nurses and for most women are quick and easy. Smears are only necessary at the appropriate intervals, but if you have worrying symptoms between smears please make an appointment to discuss them. If you are very anxious about having a smear again please come and talk to us about it.

Further information is available from NHS Cervical Screening.

Chronic (Long Term) Disease Management Clinics

These clinics are run to help patients manage long term conditions as well as possible, in order to stay healthy.

We can review the following long term conditions:

Immunisations

All the GPs at Hannage Brook Medical Centre who have children have them fully vaccinated. As a practice we strongly believe all our children should be protected in this way (with very few exceptions). If you have any doubts about any vaccination please come and speak to the nurses or GPs here.

We are now able to protect children against a wide variety of potentially serious diseases.

The routine schedule can be found here:

Advice and immunisation to patients travelling abroad is also available.

In addition to the nurses, we have staff who are specially trained in phlebotomy and our healthcare assistants can also carry out other procedures such as ECGs and blood pressure reviews.

You can make an appointment with the treatment room by asking the reception.

Minor Injuries

Hannage Brook Medical Centre are currently commissioned to provide a limited minor injury service for injuries sustained within the previous 48 hours that are relatively minor and can be dealt with at a GP practice, usually by our practice nurses, within our normal opening hours of 08:00-18:30 Monday-Friday.

Examples of minor injuries that can often be dealt with at the surgery are:

  • Lacerations capable of closure by simple techniques
  • Severe bruising requiring assessment
  • Recent injury beyond simple domestic first aid or where stitches may be required
  • Blows to the head where there has been no loss of consciousness

For anything more major the Whitworth Minor Injury Unit or Hospital A&E Department would be more appropriate.
